type='text'>ADAM RUSSELL WINS HOME RUN DERBY --NEWNAN TIMES-HERALD

'Big' bat wins Home Run Derby
By Stuart Crosby

The Times-Herald

If ESPN was in attendance Thursday at Northgate High for the Great South League Championship Series Home Run Derby, announcer Chris Berman would have liked Adam Russell's evening.
Representing the Alabama Big Train, Russell drilled a total of 20 home runs in three rounds to win the event and walk away with a $100 giftcard from event sponsor Toyota of Newnan and a commemorative bat from the league.
In the first round, Russell and Newnan Braves player Edmond Sparks went "back, back, back" four times each while Nick Brennen of the Augusta Nationals had home runs.
A tie for fourth place existed between Ryan Lloyd of the Braves, John Hennecken of the Nationals along with Tennessee Styx teammates Michael Brown and Tyler Cross.
An extra round was needed for the foursome with Brown qualifying for the second round as two of his hits hit the fence.
In the second round, Russell came alive with six long balls while Sparks drilled three, Brennen hit one and Brown hit the wall again.
The championship round would feature Russell and Sparks who were tied for the lead in the GSL home run race during the regular season and that is where the Big Train first baseman came to life as he drilled pitch after pitch over the fence.
The home run barrage came much to the chagrin of the many outfielders that consisted of three teams from the Sharpsburg AABC League and Newnan Braves player Zach Farmer.
Farmer may have had the strongest effort of the evening by serving as the catcher the entire evening under very hot temperatures while youthful members of the Cardinals, Indians and Red Sox simply wanted to chase baseballs.
When Russell hit the final out of the round off his father Greg Russell, he finished with a total of 10 while Sparks struggled with a pair of home runs in the round to finish with nine.
Train Comes Back to Beat Braves (Newnan Times-Herald)

Four-run fifth costs Newnan Braves against Big Train
By Stuart Crosby

The Times-Herald

BIRMINGHAM-The Alabama Big Train scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held off a late rally to defeat the Newnan Braves 7-5 in a Great South League game played Friday afternoon at Lawson State Community College.
The loss dropped the Braves to 7-7 as they host the Georgia Stars this afternoon at 12:30 at the Heritage School.
The game was scoreless in the first three innings a Bryan Blough of the Braves and Big Train ace Trey Vice had a solid pitching battle brewing.
The Braves had the first opportunity to break the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning as Jesse Wierzbicki reached on an infield error, Edmond Sparks walked and Brandon Behenna loaded the bases on a bloop single to right.
However, Vice recovered to retire the next two batters on strikeouts and ended the inning as Zach Farmer grounded out to second.
The Big Train got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Braves starter Bryan Blough allowed an unearned run to score on a single by Saxon Butler while a second run came home when Adam Russell hit into a double play.
Newnan came back in the top of the fifth inning and was able to get some offense off Vice as nine batters went to the plate with three runs scoring.
The first batter of the inning was retired on a groundout, then Derek Hooper and Justin Jones had consecutive singles and Wierzbicki reached on a dropped flyball by the right fielder setting the stage for Sparks who responded with a two-run single to left that tied the game at 2-2.
The Braves took a 3-2 lead when Wierzbicki scored on a two-out single by Ryan Lloyd then Vice walked Lepchitz and had a 2-0 count on Farmer before he was lifted in favor of Chad Miller who retired Farmer on a groundout to end the inning.
After Blough pitched four quality innings, Charlie Boring took over in the bottom of the fifth inning and looked to be off to a pleasant start as he retired two of the first three batters he faced.
Control would get Boring into trouble as a hit batter and two walks led to a run that tied the game at 3-3 before he was lifted in favor of Alex Riopelle who was making his Newnan debut.
Unfortunately, Riopelle's first outing was a struggle as he allowed a walk that brought home the lead run for Alabama followed a bloop RBI single by Steven Groves and a walk to Jose Marin that led to another run and a pitching change.
Eric Burdette came into the game and was able to put out the fire as he retired the next batter on a groundout to end the frame and managed to pitch a solid sixth inning as a bonus.
George Grote took over in the seventh and surrendered a run before Anthony Winborne took over in the eighth and retired the side allowing one hit.
The Braves cut into the margin in the top of the eighth inning as Farmer reached on a one out single and Hooper reached on a two out walk before Jones lined a shot along the right field line for a two-run double.
The top of the ninth inning began on a positive note for the Braves as Sparks and Behenna reached on walks before a pitching change was made and the rally ended as reliever Eric Deese retired the next two batters on strikes and ended the game as Seth Newton hit a line drive to shortstop.

The Big Train held on to a 3-2 Victory Saturday in the scorching heat at Newnan, Georgia against the homestanding Braves. The day started with half of the Big Train's starting roster arriving late to the game due to arriving at the wrong field. However, by the time the first four Big Train batters had batted, the Big Train's full line up had arrived. It looked like it was going to be a good day for the Train as the first 2 batters reached base with Brett Wright reaching on a single and Chandler Tyree moving him over with a base on balls. After a strike out, Erik Deese singled in Wright to start the game off 1-0. The bottom of the 1st also started well for the Big Train. with pitcher Trey Vice striking out one and sitting down two more on putouts to finish the inning 1-0 Big Train. The second inning was a different story as the Braves came back by scoring two runs of their own, one off a homerun by Edmond Sparks and another off a Big Train error. No more runs would score until the 7th inning when Steven Groves led off with a double. He was brought home after Jose Marin ripped a hard hit single. Marin himself would score on a hit from Keegan Lambeth. The Big Train would hold the 3-2 lead and finish with the victory. Trey Vice pitched 8 innings after throwing 104 pitches with 69 strikes. He gave up 6 hits, 1 earned run and struck out 7, giving up two base on balls. Rumiko Forrester came in in relief, threw 14 pitches, 10 for strikes, struck out 1, and gave up 1 hit. Brett Wright led the Big Train in hitting going 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Jose Marin went 1 for 3 with 1 rund and 1 RBI while Erik Deese had went 1 for 4 with an RBI. Chandler Tyree and Steven Groves each had ground rule doubles which cleared the outfield fence in the air but failed to clear the net on the shortened left field alley.

Train Downs Newnan

FROM THE TIMES-HERALD (NEWNAN,GA)
By Stuart Crosby
The Times-Herald
Trey Vice of the East Alabama Big Train continues to weave his magic over the bats of the Newnan Braves as he allowed six hits over eight innings Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 Great South League victory at The Heritage School. The loss was the third straight for the Braves who fell to 5-6 as they prepare for Tuesday night's game at LaGrange College against the Georgia Stars and Thursday's game at Columbus against the Woodbats. The Big Train scored first as Bret Wright led off the game with a single against Braves starting pitcher George Grote and advanced around the bases before coming home on a one-out single by Eric Deese. In the bottom of the inning, Vice allowed a single to Derek Hooper but a popup back to the University of Alabama-Birmingham product, a strikeout and a caught stealing kept the score at 1-0.
Meanwhile, Grote had a solid second inning as the former Newnan Cougar and Braves role pitcher retired the Big Train in order in the top of the second and gave his club a chance to get into the game. The Braves tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame as Edmond Sparks kept his power streak going by drilling the first pitch he saw from Vice over the center field fence for his fifth home run of the season.
After the home run, Vice retired the next two batters but a walk, an infield error and a single to center by Eric Weiss would give the Braves a 2-1 lead. In the top of the third inning, the Big Train had a chance to reclaim the lead with two runners on base and one out but Braves catcher Jesse Wierzbicki threw at strike to Sparks at third base to pickoff one runner while Grote recorded the third out on a flyball to Michael Hollis in left field. That would be the best scoring opportunity for each side as Vice was getting groundouts and a few of his eight strikeouts while Grote would allow a baserunner who would eventually get picked off or left stranded on base when the Big Train bats were unable to generate any offense. The end of the day for Grote would come in the top of the seventh inning when he surrendered a ground rule double to Steven Groves and left in favor of Eric Burdette. Burdette retired the first batter on a strikeout but a bloop single by Jose Marin brought Groves home with the tying run and on the throw home, Marin advanced to second. After an infield single moved Marin to third, Bret Wright hit a bouncer in the infield that Sparks was able to field and get an out but Marin was able to score the lead run on the play. The Braves had an opportunity to get at least one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning as Lloyd was hit by a Vice pitch and with one out Michael Hollis reached on a single to right. However, Vice got out of trouble as he induced an infield fly and a groundout to short to end the frame and keep the Braves off the board.

Big Train has Weekend Split.

excerpts taken from the Anniston Star
The Big Train split Great South league action this past weekend, betaing the Columbus Woodbats 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday and losing 2-0 to the Cobb Premier Stars on Saturday. scored the winning run from third on a wild pitch with nobody out in the bottom of the eleventh inning to give the Newnan Braves an 8-7 victory over the Alabama Big Train in a Great South League baseball game played Tuesday night at Northgate High School.
WIth the game tied at 7-7 Sparks and Michael Hollis led off the inning with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch thrown by losing pitcher Preston Long with Derek Hooper at bat.
With the infield playing in, the Big Train continued to pitch to Hooper and the plan failed as Long uncorked another wild pitch and Sparks came home with the winning run.
After a 45 minute delay due to lightning, the two teams began putting runs on the board as the Big Train scored a run in the top of the first inning with the Braves tying the game in the bottom of the frame as Justin Jones scored on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Jesse Wierzbicki.
The Big Train regained the lead with a run in the top of the second inning but the Braves came back in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead.
Brandon Behenna singled and scored the tying run on a double by Colby Wren who moved to third on a groundout to second and came home with the lead run when Sparks grounded out to first.
The Braves added a run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead when Jones reached on a leadoff single and was given second on an interference call on the Big Train first baseman before scoring on a one out single by Zach Farmer.
The Big Train came back in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game as Jose Marin hit a solo home run off reliever Brian Foster and one out later, Keegan Lambuth scored on a single by Saxon Butler.
However, the Braves regained the lead with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning when Wierzbicki hit a 3-0 offering from Nathan Williams over the left field fence.
Foster, who will be attending Southern University of Louisiana in the fall, settled down to pitch a steady game until the top of the eighth when he walked Lambuth to start the frame and one out later would hit Chandler Tyree which prompted his exit as he was replaced by Casey Wilson.
Wilson struggled out of the gate as he hit Saxon Butler to load the bases and allowed a sacrifice fly to right field by Adam Russell that allowed Lambuth to come home and tie the game at 5-5.
The Big Train scored twice in the top of the tenth inning as Lambuth and Tyree reached on singles and Butler' followed with a double that scored Lambuth with the lead run.
Tyree took third on Butler's double and scored on a single to center by Russell who was on the mound to start the bottom of the tenth inning.
Russell didn't last long in the bottom of the inning as he walked Wierzbicki and Zach Farmer in succession before he was replaced on the mound by Long.
A wild pitch moved Wierzbicki and pinch runner Anthony Winbourne into scoring position before RBIs from Behenna and Wren tied the game at 7-7.
<img Two batters later, he surrendered an RBI single to Byne Gooden and Eric Burdette was brought into the game to relieve Blough.
Burdette surrendered an RBI groundout to make it 3-0.
The Big Train added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as Burdette surrendered a two-run shot over the left field fence as Russell connected for his second home run.
The Braves averted a shutout in the bottom of the eighth inning when Sparks led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run over the center field fence.
In the top of the ninth inning, Casey Wilson took over for the Braves and allowed a pair of one out singles before settling down to retire two of the next three batters.
Sparks was 2-for-4 at the plate including the home run while former Northgate Viking Derek Hooper was 3-for-5 in the game.

Big Train off to a Solid Start 2010

As of June 8th, the Alabama Big Train are currently rolling to a 3-2 record. Injuries, family commitments, and medical situations left the Big Train with 11 players on the roster to battle the AWBIL Royals in Jonesboro, Georgia. Pitchers Kelby Deerman and Trey Vice were called into service as 1st basemen and actually hit in the line-up for the Big Train. In the first game, the Big Train suffered only their 4th loss of the season by losing to the Royals 3-4 in extra-innings. However, the Big Train would not be discouraged. Adam Polston (photo) pitched 5 outstanding innings of no-hit baseball before being relieved by Trey Vice who finished the deal to give the Big Train a 9-0 victory in the no-hitter. The Big Train hopes to have the majority of the team back in the line-up as they face the Cobb Premier Stars on Wednesday and Thursday before facing the Newnan Braves on Friday and Saturday. If these four in row weren’t tough enough, the Train faces Columbus in a make-up game on Sunday. All of these games will be played at Henry Farms Park in Jacksonville, AL.

BIG TRAIN YOUTH BASEBALL CAMPS ROLLING INTO A TOWN NEAR YOU

East Alabama Big Train Summer Baseball Camp
This is a great opportunity for any young ball player and a great way to support the East Alabama Big Train
July 13-16 9:00 a.m.-12:00 at Henry Farm Park in Jacksonville, AL
July 20-23 9:00 a.m.-12:00 at Oxford Lake in Oxford, AL

Camp Rate: $100 a week or $ 30 per day.

Mechanics of Hitting ** Pitching ** Defense **Base Running **

Players will be divided by Age & Now the Big Train is in sole possession of 1st place. Nearly 4,000 spectators were present including over 2,000 soldiers from Fort Benning, GA. . It was a stirring evening as both teams honored the troops on the birthday of our nation. The Wood Bats actually donned camouflage jerseys to show their support. Saxton Butler led the Big Train, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Josh Dabbs scored two runs and Caleb Bowen drove in two. Today, it is the second-oldest minor league stadium in the country. The original covered grandstand is still in place, though a new tin roof has replaced the former wooden one. A black iron gate surrounds the field, the front of which says "Macon Base Ball Park."This hearkens back to the day when baseball was the primary source of entertainment in the South as well as the rest of the country. "We started slow this summer with the bats, but we have gotten on a roll a little bit," Big Train head coach Roberto Martinez said. "We are swinging the bats pretty good of late." East Alabama relied heavily on Dorrance at the top of the lineup, but it was Edwards that got the Big Train on the board in the first inning, legging out an infield single and quickly stealing second base. Waugh followed with a single and also swiped second, putting both runners in scoring position for the Big Train's most dangerous hitter Ryan McCrory.
McCrory grounded out, but it was enough to score Edwards and put the Big Train up 1-0. The trio struck again in the third and fifth innings. With one out in the third, Dorrance doubled and later came around to score on a Waugh double. McCrory then drove in the Oxford product from second with a bloop single that put the Big Train up 3-0. In the fifth, Dorrance doubled once again, giving McCrory a chance to knock in his third run of the game. The Big Train's clean-up hitter did just that, with a single to score Dorrance from third. "All three guys (Dorrance, Edwards and Waugh) had a good approach. That's why I have them at the top of the lineup. All three can run. We like to steal a lot and put pressure on the other team, and they have been successful doing that," Martinez said.
It was another Oxford product that did the majority of the damage in the fifth inning. After Andrew Brooke walked, Saxson Butler crushed a Malcolm Gay pitch off the right field wall, driving in both runners and putting the game out of reach.
The Big Train has won six games in a row and will play every day this weekend at Alexandria High. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. today.

Big Train wins, 12-2

by Anniston Star staff
WALESKA, Ga. — The East Alabama Big Train improved to 7-2 with a 7-inning, mercy-rule win over the Winward Rangers, 12-2. With the bases loaded, Ben Inman came through with an infield single, pushing Merit Hicks across the plate to put the Wood Bats up 1-0 in the top of the second.
The Big Train answered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning. Columbus pitcher Iain Sebastian walked the first three batters to set up a three-run double from former Oxford standout Chandler Tyree.
Tyree later scored on a throwing error that was followed by a Jono Waugh single, driving in Qualon Millender from third and putting the Big Train up 5-1.
"We swung the bats well in the first game," East Alabama coach Roberto Martinez said.
East Alabama looked to be in command of the contest behind a strong pitching performance from Trey Vice, but things went south in the top of the fifth.
Vice quickly recorded two outs but then began to tire. The UAB pitcher walked the next three batters before giving way to Adam Polston.
Hicks made the Big Train pay for the free passes, clearing the bases with a three-run double and cutting the deficit to one. Kevin Ruiz then tied the game with an RBI single.
"We got into a little bit of a jam after we were up 5-1," Martinez said. "We gave up a big three-run double that really hurt us."
The Wood Bats pushed two more runs across in the sixth inning after a throwing error to seal the victory.
The Big Train had six hits in the contest, five of which came courtesy of former Oxford Yellow Jackets.
In the nightcap, each starter threw a gem. East Alabama's Kelby Deerman pitched six shutout innings, allowing only two hits. Columbus' Levi Futo matched Deerman pitch for pitch, scattering two hits in five innings.
"(Deerman) is a guy that throws anywhere from 80-to-84. He is a soft-throwing lefty that throws a lot of strikes. He commands all three pitches — breaking ball, changeup and fastball. He got in a jam in the middle of the game and got out of it," Martinez said.
Each team struggled to hit the ball in nightcap. The Great South League uses wooden bats, which is something hitters must adjust to.
"With an aluminum bat, hitters can put a bad swing on a pitch and get away with it. With a wood bat, it teaches them how to hit and how to stay inside of the ball and put the barrel on it the right way. It makes a big difference," Martinez said.
The Big Train did manage to push across a run in the second inning that proved to be the difference-maker.
Ryan McCrory walked to start the inning and later moved to second on a passed ball. After the next two hitters were retired, Jeremy Dorrance singled to push McCrory across the plate.
Deerman, who pitches at the University of Alabama, gave way to JSU reliever Bill Henke in the 7th. Henke walked two hitters but was able to get out of the jam to record the save.
The Big Train is scheduled to finish the series with Columbus today at Henry Farms Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The doubleheader saw 205 people in attendance
